SURF: Heroes de Mayo!

1.- ¿Cómo evalúas hasta ahora el campeonato?
Ricardo Marín: Hasta ahora bastante bien. Hoy día tuvimos una muy buena condición de ola, asi que partimos en la mañana, como ustedes pueden ver, con olas de casi de 13, 14 pies. En general, la participación de los competidores que han venido de afuera y la gente de acá, de Iquique, ha estado bastante buena.
2.- O sea estás satisfecho con la recepción del público, con la tribuna de la prensa...
RM: Sí, mira en general todo siempre en este campeonato está como bien afiatado, está como bien armado, entonces generalmente todo funciona bastante bien. Siempre los primeros días son de 'inicio', de echar a correr todo un programa, pero el equipo de trabajo que es de la Asociación (de Surf) y el Municipio está bien afiatado en lo que significa la realización de este evento. Así que, por ese lado, ningún problema; y en cuanto a los corredores, la cantidad de corredores que viene nos da un poco el 'aval' de que el campeonato tiene su peso a nivel nacional.
3.- Son cerca de 70 deportistas, hay anuncios de olas de gran volumen, también hay cinco mil puntos a entregar de premio, ¿Crees que Héroes de Mayo es uno de los eventos nacionales de surf más grandes?
RM: Es el más grande. No es que creemos, sino que es el más grande. De hecho es el único campeonato que llega más de 22 años haciéndose. O sea, estamos hablando que los primeros los primeros tres eventos que se hicieron en Chile a nivel competitivo de surf se hicieron acá (en la ciudad). De hecho, mi hermano y yo tuvimos el orgullo de haberlo hecho el año '80 y algo'. Por ese lado súper bien, un poco de tratar de aquí para adelante afiatar este campeonato como ya algo más propio nuestro, de Iquique, y también incorporarle, estamos en conversaciones con el municipio, incorporarle un ámbito internacional. Es decir, hacer en paralelo con éste (Héroes de Mayo) un evento internacional invitacional que traiga a corredores de alto nivel.
4.- O sea tienen perspectiva internacional, tienen mayor crecimiento. Hay posibilidades de un horizonte más amplio
RM: Sí, de todas maneras. Esto se hacía antiguamente a nivel internacional, la idea era hacerlo nacional-internacional. Gracias a Dios, como se conformó la Federación (de Surf) los separamos, separamos a todo los que son corredores nacionales para que ellos mantengan un circuito nacional de lo que es internacional... (se escuchan vítores) Acaba de clasificar un iquiqueño así que bien para nosotros. Y, por otro lado como te digo, es potenciarlo un poco más, estamos con intenciones de hacer mangas internacionales, traer corredores internacionales y, es más les paso el dato, hoy día (miércoles 18) vienen llegando de Pichilemu varios corredores de 'Big Wave' que son de lo mejor que hay, quieren venir a conocer Iquique y estarían llegando, o llegaron anoche a última hora o estarían llegando dentro de la mañana, así que más tardecito van a estar acá por la zona de competencia, por decirlo así.
5.- Ayer (martes 17) terminó el Ceremonial de Surf en Pichilemu, donde ganó Cristian Merello. ¿Crees que en cierto grado el evento que sucedió en Pichilemu eclipsó al campeonato de acá?
RM: No, no, para nada porque son dos formatos diferentes: El 'Big Wave', como la palabra lo dice, son olas grandes y en Chile hay del pool de corredores, de 100 corredores a nivel nacional, deben haber unos cuatro o cinco que corren 'Big Wave' y dos que deben seguir el circuito a nivel internacional. De hecho, (ellos) llegaron anoche. Terminaron, El 'Big Wave' es un día y se vienen de inmediato. Así que, por ese lado, no, no para nada. Lo que sí, los campeonatos de 'Big Wave' tienen un rango de espera que se llama, que es un tiempo de espera por la mejor marejada, el mejor oleaje, muy amplio que este año se hizo de tres meses, por lo tanto, nos coincidió justo ahora, pero se coordinó de tal forma de que ellos pudieran terminar allá y venirse en forma inmediata para acá.

Interview: Ricardo Marin, president of the Surf Association Iquique
1.- How do you asses the championship so far?
Ricardo Marin: So far so good, we had good water condition today, so we started this morning, as you can see, with 13 - 14 feet waves. In general, the participation of the contestants, who have come from outside and from here, Iquique, has been very good.
2.- So you are satisfied with the reception of the audience, and with the press
RM: Yes, look, in general everything in this tournament is like well done, like well build, so generally every works very well. The first days always are try-outs and start to work in the program, but the work team which is the association of surf and the council are well linked to the realization of this event. So, there no problem; and about the contestants, the amount of them give a big national importance to this tournament.
3.- There are almost 70 competitors, there are announcements of big waves, and there are 5 thousands points in prices, do you think that "Heroes de Mayo" is one of the most important national events?
RM: It is the biggest. It isn't that we think it's the biggest it actually is. In fact is the only tournament that has lasted 22 years. We are talking about that the first three events that were carried out in Chile at a surfing competitive level were here in the city. In deed, my brother and I had the privilege of having carried out the event in the 1980's. In that sense all the things have been working very well, and in the future we want to make this tournament part of our city and also incorporate it an international field. I mean, make an event in parallel with this (heroes de mayo) and bring international contestants.
4.- So you do have international purposes, a bigger development. Is there any possibility of wider expectations?
RM: For sure. This used to be carried out as an international tournament; the idea was making it national-international. Thank god, the surf federation was created and it keeps all the national contestants in order to have their own local competitions...(acclamations are heard) a local contestant has just classified so good for us. And by the other hand as I told you it is about to give a bit more of emphasis to tournament. Today (Wednesday 18th) people from the "Big Wave" will be arriving or they've arrived, they're coming from Pichilemu to see Iquique and later they'll be here in the zone of competence.
5.- Yesterday (tuesday 17th) the ceremony in Pichilemu ended, where Cristian Merello won. Do you think that the event in Pichilemu overshadow the event here?
RM: no at all, 'cause they are two different format: Big Wave, as the word says there are big waves and in Chile there are bunch of surfers, of a 100 of national surfers there are like 4 or 5 who participate in Big Wave and 2 who participate in the international circuit. In fact, they arrived late last night. They finished, the big wave is just a day and they come here immediately. so not at all. but the Big Wave tournaments have something called holding range, that is a period of time in which good swells are waiting, this year that period was 3 month and the tournament clash with ours but it was schedule for when the contestants finishes there they were able to come here.

Junio parece ser el mes del mundial de fútbol y obviamente compartimos la alegría de ver a la Roja ganando y
demostrando que 'si es chileno es bueno'. Y aunque la gran mayoría de los medios deportivos se vuelcan a Sudáfrica
en busca de goles y vuvuzelas, la creciente práctica de skate, surf y de demás tablas indican que esa cobertura no
alcanza a eclipsar esta nueva tendencia. Porque se vienen enraizando e interpretando no sólo una preferencia por
una atividad emergente, sino que interpretan un estilo de enfrentar la vida más acompañado, alegre y fluido.
A esta realidad que cada vez atrapa a más jóvenes -y, muchas veces, a 'no tan jóvenes'- es que quisimos consagrar
este pequeño espacio y con ánimo de ser sólo un andamio más en esta torre que van construyendo los raiders día a
día con sus ganas, fuerzas y sueños, y que esperamos que algún día ésta se transforme en un gran rascacielos del
que todos podamos sentirnos orgullosos y contentos.
Ésta es la finalidad de 'Extremo Norte' que, en esta primera edición y en inglés, entrega las experiencias vividas en el
campeonato de surf 'Héroes de Mayo' en el sector las Urracas de Iquique. Igualmente les dejamos las mejores maniobras del Manny Mania de Red

The beginning of a journey... in a board!
June seems to be the month of the world cup and obviously we share the joy of watching "la Roja" winning and showing that if it is made in Chile it is good. Despite the fact that sport media has flooded South Africa looking for goals and vuvuzelas, the increasing practice of skateboarding, surfing and other extreme sports shows that this coverage is not enough for shadowing this new tendency. Because it is taking root and interpreting not just a priority for a emerging activity but interpreting as a way of face life a little bit more accompanied, cheerful and natural.
This reality that is trapping not only to young people but older people as well; to this reality is that we wanted to consecrate a small space with the intention of being just another scaffold in this tower that the raiders are building day after day with their hopes, strength, and dreams. Hopefully, one day this will become a great skyscraper of which we all are going to be happy with and proud of
This is the purpose of Extremo Norte which, in this first edition and in its English version, brings the experiences in the surf tournament "Heroes de Mayo" in the Urracas area in Iquique. Also we bring you the best movements of Red Bull's "Manny Mania" tournament that occurred at the skate park of "Tierra de Campeones" and the inauguration of the skate park in Mejillones.
